The Unsettling Truth of Energy Vampires

Each of us carries a unique vibration, an energetic signature that instantly resonates with some people and clashes with others. We’ve all experienced that instant “click”—a shared wavelength where conversation is effortless. Conversely, we’ve also encountered those energetic mismatches, the subtle or not-so-subtle clashes that leave us feeling inexplicably drained or uneasy.

For me, I pick up on people’s energy almost immediately. I can tell within five minutes if we’re going to click. This doesn’t mean I immediately judge a book by its cover, but I know my limits. Have you ever been out with friends, enjoying the conversation, and yet felt utterly exhausted afterward? That’s me. It has taken most of my adult life to learn how to balance this effect. My curiosity lies in understanding how we navigate this energetic landscape: How do we build shields against negativity, and how do we open ourselves to receive positive energy?

I am spiritual—I believe in God and practice my Greek Orthodox faith. But I also strongly believe that God created the universe and led a path for each of us, and that we have the free will to live the best way we know how. I constantly put positive intentions and prayers out into the universe, believing that what you send out will return.  Karma is a real thing…But just as strongly as I believe in sending out light, I believe in fiercely protecting your own energy.

You know how you feel when you’re with others. You know who the energy vampires are, leaving you depleted. So, what is your preparation process? What is your armor?

If I know I’m going into an environment with a lot of people or potential stressors, I have a whole preparation process. I try to quiet my mind and my soul. I often meditate, take a long shower, and allow myself peaceful moments. Sometimes I pray. Then, I set a deliberate, positive intention for the event and walk out the door with a smile. It is an exercise in self-discipline—a conscious effort to not let others and their actions agitate me.

When I come home, I have to clear the juju.   I try to leave all the energies I encountered that day outside my front door. For me, protecting my peace is holistic:

  • Spiritual Comfort: Yes, I keep holy oil and holy water in my house, and icons hang in my home. This anchors me to my faith and provides a sense of sanctuary.
  • Energetic Tools: Yes, I believe that having certain plants or crystals helps absorb or deflect negative energy. It works for me.
  • The Intentional Act: Most importantly, I make a conscious choice every day to be the protector of my own vibe.

This is a continuous exercise in prioritizing your inner world over the chaos of the outer world. It is your right—and your responsibility—to choose what energy you allow into your sanctuary.
